I was recently commissioned to design a media unit for a client in Williamsburg. The homeowners come from two schools of thought: One works in animation & is an avid record collector, the other is a minimalist who doesn’t like clutter. Let’s intrepret this: DVDs, toys, records must be properly stowed & easily accessed. They wanted something chic, contemporary & simple. NOTE: These are Iphone shots documenting the installation. Professional photos will be on elizabethbolognino.com soon.
The other requirement: a warm fireplace to endure hard NYC winters. I reached out to Hearth Cabinet, the only ventless fireplace company that is approved by both NYFD & Department of Buildings. Hearth Cabinet uses a gel based alcohol that only off-gases H20 & oxygen. Another huge plus is that Hearth Cabinet makes the firebox custom to any shape or size, right here in New York.
To achieve the experience of “cozying” up by the fire, I integrated a walnut bench into the system & custom built a 3-sided fireplace to sit on the 11′ plinth. The top is a liner cut Olympic Grey marble, furnished & fabricated by my buddies at Pro Design.
The drawers on the left are custom metal vented shelves for the av equipment. The remaining drawers were built for the client’s DVD collection. Below are progress shots sent by my millworker during the build process.
The right side cabinet is open for easy record access.
The left cabinet has an integrated thumb pull with adjustable linear shelving. Both cabinets are an equal/equal module built for records.
