Sometimes being busy can do wonders on your creativity. Managing a growing business and having a family surely keep my hands full! However, the mind allows special things to peek through once & again. Tonight, I was sitting on my sofa & Michael Thonet came to mind. That man was a genius. In 1859, he created Chair no 14 – which is still coined “The Chair of Chairs”.

Thonet used “bentwood” technology – which basically applies moisture to wood grain to allow for bending. This is the same methodology that Alvar Aalto, Josef Hoffman, Frank Lloyd Wright, Isamu Noguchi & current day designers use to turn rigid form into something delicate. Bentwood help transition Vienna Succession to International Art Nouveau – and on to Arts & Crafts – French Art Deco and 50’s biomorphism.
